Route paralleled roughly by Wabash R.R. between St. Charles and New Florence junction; by Missouri-Kansas-Texas R.R. between Rocheport and Boonville; by the Missouri Pacific R.R. between Sweet Springs and Concordia; and by the Chicago & Alton R.R. between Odessa and Blue Springs.

Hotels in large cities; tourist and trailer camps throughout.

US 40, the most direct route across the State, follows in general the historic course of western migration through the Missouri River Valley. West of St. Louis the highway crosses the Missouri River at St. Charles and follows the high prairie ridges to Boonville, where it recrosses the river and continues westward through Kansas City to the Kansas Line.
